People hold a vigil outside The Stonewall Inn to mourn the death of nonbinary high school student, Nex Benedict, in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, NY on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024.
Nex Benedict, 16, they/them, died one day after they were beaten in a physical altercation with three other students in a school restroom in Owasso, Oklahoma.
Mourners outside of Stonewall, a historical landmark for the LBGTQAI+ community, expressed anger, sadness and outrage as incidents of physical and mental harm towards transgender and nonbinary people continue to rise across the U.S.
Many community advocates say Oklahoma’s recent passing of a bill mandating that students only use the restroom that aligns with their gender assigned at birth has contributed to Nex’s beating and ultimate death.
